Over the years I have had great admiration for the integrity shown by the Rev. Billy Graham, and quite honestly, his son Franklin is doing an amazing job of carrying on his father’s legacy.
Even as I am writing, the Republican National Committee is holding a national convention where they will propose their nomination for President of the United States. The Democrats meet starting the week of July 25 for the same purpose, and while we all know that politics can divide the people, it would be my hope and prayer that Christians can unite on biblical principles.
We should never vote because one or the other party promises to fill our pockets or our cupboards. Our vote should NEVER be cast seeking some personal gain. Instead we must focus on honesty and morality as spelled out in the Bible. The dilemma we often face is feeling we must vote for the lesser of the evils, so sometime the decision is made not to vote at all. Frankly, that is not a good choice either because it’s possible that could lead to the election of the greater of evils.
Let’s think again about 2nd Chronicles 7:14. While the primary application of this verse is not directed at the United States, it never-the-less is an eternal principle. God’s people must pray. We are commanded to pray for our officials and it is important to pray concerning elections, BUT FIRST we must also turn away from our personal and corporate wrong doing as Christians. We must truly seek God and we must, in true repentance confess our sins. We must clean up our lives because God tells us it is only then that He forgives our sin AND heals our land.
Franklin Graham, in his prayer for our country, stated:
“Our country is in trouble and our only hope is God – it’s not the politicians. God uses politicians (sic: to judge if necessary) so we pray they will listen to God’s voice and hear God’s voice…”
Again we, as Christians, must also listen to God’s voice and hear God’s voice. As was mentioned in my last blog, freedom is never free, so we must pray. We must repent. We must confess. And yes, we must vote.
GOD BLESS THE U.S.A.
